James Jackson Grundy Appeal

On Wednesday 10th January 2007, a packed meeting at the Salt Museum, Northwich resolved to set up an Appeal Fund to bring back to Northwich, the vessel, James Jackson Grundy.

James Jackson Grundy was one of eight motor packets built for ICI and named after their local Alkali Distribution Manager. Built in 1948 by Yarwood’s Shipbuilders, she transported chemicals between the ICI Works and the docks at Birkenhead and Liverpool.

Many will remember the boat as the T.S. Witch when it was moored on the River Weaver as a training vessel for the Northwich Sea Cadets from 1980 to 2001.

Nigel Bowker, one of the current owners who attended the meeting said “As Historic Boat enthusiasts, we would very much welcome the Grundy’s return to Northwich where she belongs. We have just had her docked and surveyed. She is in good working order. All her upper works have been repaired and her main and auxiliary machinery has been thoroughly overhauled”.

John Tackley, a former River Weaver trip boat owner, on taking up the position of Appeal Fund Chairman, said “This vessel is a unique opportunity for Northwich. Built in 1948, its heritage celebrates Yarwood’s Shipbuilding, ICI and the Weaver Navigation. Our vision is a floating museum and heritage centre that can not only travel the Weaver but further a field to Liverpool, Warrington and Manchester promoting our town and its heritage. It will also be an invaluable education centre for future generations”.

Matt Wheeler, Curator of the Salt Museum, said “The Museum supports any project that allows visitors to further explore the history of Northwich. One possibility is that the Grundy could be moored behind the Salt Museum, thus significantly increasing the visitor experience to the Museum”.

The Appeal Fund has already made a grant fund application and is seeking support from companies, local businesses and individuals.
